In the state of Massachusetts, a notary public is entitled to the following fees:

  • For the protest of a bill of exchange, order, draft or check for non-acceptance or non-payment, or of a promissory note for non-payment of less than $500 - $.50
  • For the protest of a bill of exchange, order, draft or check for non-acceptance or non-payment, or of a promissory note for non-payment of more than $500 - $1.00
  • For recording a the protect above - $.50
  • For noting the non-acceptance of non-payment of a bill of exchange, order, draft or check for non-acceptance or non-payment, or of a promissory note for non-payment - $.75
  • For each notice of the non-acceptance or non-payment of a bill of exchange, order, draft, check, or note, given to a party liable for the payment thereof - $.25
  • The whole cost of protest, including necessary notices and the record, if the bill, order, draft, check or note of the amount of less than $500 – $1.50 maximum
  • The whole cost of protest, including necessary notices and the record, if the bill, order, draft, check or note of the amount of more than $500 – $2.00 maximum
  • The whole cost of noting, including recording and notices, shall in no case exceed – $1.50 maximum
