How to Become an Electronic Notary

A new and growing business for notary publics is the world of being an eNotary, or electronic notary. An eNotary is a notary public who is able to notarize documents electronically and perform all their services as a notary public virtually. The option to become an eNotary is not yet available in all states; however it is a rapidly growing industry that will likely soon be an option in most states.

  • Step 1:

The first step to become an Electronic Notary is determining whether or not this option is currently available in your state. Currently the only states to offer electronic notarization and electronic notary services are Colorado, Michigan, California, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, Florida, Indiana and North Carolina.
  • Step 2:

If your state allows electronic notarization and authorizes eNotaries, you will then have to complete an application to become an eNotary. It is important to note that in most states this involves additional requirements to the typical notary public application. Most often this will include the typical state notary public application and an additional application to become an Electronic Notary and receive your electronic notary seal.
  • Step 3:

Promote your services. Currently, an eNotary is very rare in most communities and in today's market they offer an invaluable service that allows people to get documents notarized and take oaths electronically. Since time is incredibly valuable to many notary clients, being able to act as an eNotary, or electronic notary, will save them time and make them likely to utilize your services as a notary public. Make sure to advertise this service to clients.
